University-Model Schools

Founded in Texas in 1999, University-Model Schools (UMS) partner with parents to provide the best of a homeschool and private school education. Children attend school in a traditional classroom 2-3 days per week, and use the remaining days to complete assignments at home. Similar to a university schedule, students may take a full course load, or 1 or 2 classes.

UMS emphasize strong academics and preparation for college, and are well suited to homeschoolers who are comfortable having their children taught by outside instructors. These programs are less expensive than traditional private schools, and are a good choice for single or working parents.

However parents who use this option may encounter problems with the same inflexible schedules and teaching methods that plague traditional schools.
