First Language Lessons

First Language Lessons is a scripted grammar and composition program for grades 1 through 4 developed by Susan Wise Bauer, author of The Well-Trained Mind.

Levels 1 and 2 cover 1st and 2nd grades, and consist of short, 5-15 minute memorization, grammar, copywork and narration exercises. Much of the work in this level of the program is completed orally.

Level 3 covers grades 2 through 4, and requires both the instructor's manual and a student workbook. Level 3 builds on the grammar concepts taught in previous levels, and also teaches dictation, sentence diagramming, and dictionary skills. Composition is also introduced at this level.
