First Language Lessons - Love it!

by Karen
(Palm Harbor, Florida USA)

I started home-schooling my 1st grader and 3rd grader this year. Both of my children are using First Language Lessons.

My 1st grader started with Lesson 1 and my 3rd grader started with Lesson 101. I started my 3rd grader back at Grade 2 because I wasn't sure what was taught in Public School and how much was NOT taught in public school.....and I didn't want her to miss anything.

It is working out great. The lesson are not too long, but really pack a punch with the amount of information and the way in which it is taught. The kids do not get bored or think that lessons take to long.

I would highly recommend this book as a starting off point for grades K-3.

Amazing!

by Tiffany
(Forestburg, Tx , USA)

Levels Used: 1st & 2nd Grade
Dates Used: 2006-2008

Likes: First language lessons is amazing! My son has gotten an amazing head start & has enjoyed the activities with me. This is more than just grammar, it is a complete language curriculum.

You will teach parts of speech, memorization, poetry, short story activities & so much more. The best part is that the lessons are quick & easy & WORK! We spend about 10-15 each day on a lesson. It is very teacher friendly as it guides you through each lesson & offers extra work if desired.

My son has enjoyed the poetry & has gained confidence with the memorization & presentation skills he has learned from using First Language Lessons.

Dislikes: I have no complaints. I will say that I wish I would have purchased the spiral bound guide.

Easy to Use

by Amanda
(Charlotte, NC, USA)

Levels Used: 1 & 2
Dates Used: Aug-Now

Likes: Short lessons. They take 5 min a day to do. It tells you exactly what to say, very easy to use.

Dislikes: She thinks it is boring. But it is short so she does not complain to much. She is suppose to answer in complete sentences, but she will not.

Very Gentle, but Too Scripted

by Liesl
(NC)

Levels Used: K, 1, early 2
Dates Used: 2006-2007

Likes: It was all in one book. I could use it for all my children at different levels and abilities. It was very easy to implement and very gentle in approach.

Dislikes: I felt like it was too scripted. The girls tired of hearing "A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea" 3x per day. While they learned from it, they seem to learn better from a simple workbook approach.

Easy to use and the kids like it!

by Michelle
(Round Lake Beach, IL)

Levels Used: 1st, 2nd
Dates Used: started using last year 2007, continuing this year with a second student

Likes: Lessons are short and to the point. The kids enjoy it. It is easy to explain to the child because it is all written out for the parent/teacher. It's all inclusive (though there are no worksheets).

Dislikes: Sometimes it is a bit too repetitive for my tastes, as well as my son (trying to drill a lesson into the child's mind?), so we would review it and then do the next lesson. Some days he wanted to do more! Since there are no worksheets, I sometimes supplement with worksheets I have in books on hand.
