Rosetta Stone is a computer-based, language-instruction program that utilizes CD-ROM, along with a workbook and quizzes. The company offers programs for languages as popular as French and Spanish, as well as those hard to find in other foreign language programs, such as Swahili.
The program teaches through the immersion method; using images and word association. Children learn by associating words from the language they are learning to pictures of known objects, people, or animals (such as a ball, a cat, or a girl). The company also offers speech recognition software that gives students feedback on correct pronunciation.
Each lesson improves upon the students listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The final lesson in each unit allows the student to simulate a real-life conversation.
Rosetta Stone currently offers over 30 languages for homeschool students of all ages, from young elementary to adults. The software contains tools that allow parents to track student progress. Homeschoolers can count each level of the program as 1 credit of high school foreign language if the workbooks and quizzes are used.
