Saxon Math- Great Program!

by Sarah
(Illinois)

We used Saxon Math for the first time last year (the '08-09 school year) for my 1st and 2nd grader. I was looking for something that would help me as a parent be a better math teacher.

I love that Saxon tells me exactly what to say and how to teach something. I also love that it is a spiral program and so it doesn't let the children forget the concepts they've learned a ways back. It often uses games and hands-on activities to introduce concepts or to help them remember facts.

The downside to the program is the amount of time it sometimes take to prepare for the lesson, for instance cutting out certain sized shapes or writing numbers on a stack of cards, sometimes just for one lesson. Also, the amount of time the lesson itself takes to teach and the "homework" for the student, which I often find excessive.

Overall, though, Saxon is a great program that I plan to continue to use. It can be fun to teach as well!
