Spell to Write and Read Curriculum ReviewSpell to Write and Read is a program that teaches spelling and reading through the use of 70 phonograms and 28 spelling rules. The Core Kit provides instruction in reading and spelling for grades K thorugh 12. Included in the kit are the teaching guides needed, spelling rule cards, and phonogram cards. All phonograms are taught in the first few months of kindergarten; but a child can easily be placed into this program later by taking a series of placement tests. Spell to Write and Read uses a multi-sensory approach; teaching through, hearing, speaking, seeing, and writing. The program starts with spelling rather than reading, and teaches children to write and say the symbols that represent the sounds of speech. Handwriting is taught at the same time as the seventy phonograms. The student then moves on to building words from phonogram sounds. Spelling rules are taught as they come up in spelling words. After building words from phonograms, the student moves on to composing oral sentences; then to writing original sentences and reading them back. It is only after this step has been achieved that students begin to read simple books. Penmanship and composition skills are also taught, especially with older students. Enrichment activities are included to reinforce multiple language arts skill areas, and there is a focus on developing writing and reading skills. to read reviews of this program.
