Artistic Pursuits is Worth the Expense

We used levels K-3/4-6 from 2007-2009.

Likes: Artistic Pursuits puts it all together for me!

Each Lesson covers an element of art such as space, texture or line. The first step is to read about the topic. Then you and the student study a famous or not so famous work that exemplifies that concept. The next step is some instruction of how to use the concept in the student's own work. For example, the book points out that you need curved lines when you draw a pumpkin and shows techniques for creating the look of different textures. Lastly, there is a project. The student is to create a work using the suggested medium and subject or technique. She or he is to keep in mind the topic of the lesson while she or he produces art.

I love that someone who knows more than I do about art has put together an analysis of elements of art along with examples, techniques and guided projects that are not stifling. My children love this program and it has improved their ability and enjoyment of creating art, as well as teaching them about the use of the elements in famous works.

I recommend acquiring good quality art supplies.

Dislikes: Artistic Pursuits and the supplies can be an expensive course of study. We have found that program is worthy of the expense.

Awesome Art Program!

Levels Used: all
Dates Used: 2008 - current

Likes: Though Artistic Pursuits was not a good fit for my older (lacking in artistic ability or confidence) daughter, my younger daughter has loved it and thrives on it. I appreciate the approach to art - teaching one concept at a time. The concept is explained in simple terms, examples are given (from popular artists and from other "normal" people), and the assignments are appropriate and fun.

Dislikes: It may seem a bit pricey at the outset - but it's worth it!

Enjoyed the Variety

Levels Used: Book 1, Grades K-3
Dates Used: 2008-09

Likes: I used this with my third grade daughter. She enjoyed all the different projects because she got to use many different types of art supplies. She used clay, chalk, pastel, crayons, water colors, and several others.

The book was easy to use. Each lesson shows a work of art and how the artist created it. The lessons help the children to look in greater detail at the art work and learn the history behind it. Then, the children get to try to create something using a similar method. We had a lot of fun with little prep!

Dislikes: Some of the supplies used were difficult to find, but I did eventually find everything that we needed.
