Making Math Meaningful

by Carla
(Noblesville, IN, USA)

Product: Making Math Meaningful
Subject: Math
Levels Used: 2nd
Dates Used: 2009

Likes: When I first saw the book, I didn't think I would like it. It's mostly word problems and I HATED word problems when I was in school. However, my daughter, who had tried other math curriculums, has fallen in love with it! She no longer hates math, which is a miracle in itself. The mechanics of math were never a problem for her, but the repetitiveness and length of the lessons in other books were deflating for her.

The lessons are more hands-on than most books, using counters and other manipulatives. The book work does not require pages of the same kind of problems every time. The variety of the problems and the use of everyday materials makes math fun and meaningful for the child and helps the teacher to be able to apply concepts to everyday life.
