AAS is a program that is broken into steps. You may spend one day or one or more weeks on a step. This is great for me as it takes away the urge to "check off" that day's lesson and helps me focus on my student learning the skill.

It utilizes vertical phonics, but then goes back and introduces using the sounds starting with the short vowels.

Tiles are used to study the spelling rules before practicing on paper. My 4yo daughter was too young to do the writing part effectively but we still proceeded with the tiles which worked just fine. As she gets older I will add in the writing portion.

I have always felt strongly that phonics are an integral part, but AAS helped me understand how important they are.

My daughter was not reading when we started Level One. By about step 10 she was reading short vowel words.

I have not found a part of the program I dislike so far. I am very impressed with the thought that went into developing this curriculum.

Likes: This curriculum lays out rules in a memorable way. It incorporates drill/repetition with the index card box daily so things are truly mastered, not learned once and forgotten. It is open and go, no lesson prep makes it great for this busy mom of 5!

Dislikes: Cost! Each level averages $40.00. Ouch! But worth it!

#1 I liked the hands-on approach to spelling. The spelling tiles were great!

#2 No teacher planning, its all laid out for you and even tells you exactly what to say.

#3 Words that follow the same rule are studied together.

Dislikes: I just didn't have the time to spend 10-20 minutes per day per child that the curriculum required.
