Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

by Spetzi
(NJ)

Product: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Subject: reading instruction
Levels Used: ages 3-5
Dates Used: 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009

Likes: I have used this with all four of my children and it works extremely well. The lessons are scripted so they are easy to implement. There is no planning after reading the introduction. You and your child can grab the book and snuggle up on the couch.

The child learns how to read from left to right and how to read line by line. Students sound out words then are encouraged to "say them fast" to achieve fluency. S/he practices rhyming words.

All of this is done with an enthusiastic air and the children seem to love it.

One of the best things about Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is that s/he is able to read a sentence after just a few lessons. He or she will be reading a paragraph before you know it. They might not be able to read as much in a 'regular' book, but that will come soon. Teach Your Child to Read builds a tremendous amount of confidence which I've found to be an important part of taking off with reading.

Dislikes: The unusual fonts used in the book take a few tries to get used to. This book connects letters that make a single sound such as "sh" or "th". It also makes silent letters smaller so that the child does not pronounce them or puts a line over long vowels. These helps disappear long before Lesson 100.

We did not use the writing portion of the lessons.
