Sequential Spelling Curriculum Review
Sequential Spelling is a seven-volume spelling program available from AVKO Educational Research Foundation. The teaching methods of Sequential Spelling are significantly different from most spelling programs available today.
Students do not study lists, but instead remember patterns that build words. Rules of the English language are presented within the program by usage, rather than through rules to be learned. Emphasis is on learning the patterns and meanings of the words. Words are presented in related families, moving from the root word to the expanded forms of the words.
Students learn words through daily tests. In order to help with remembering word patterns and meanings, children correct their tests immediately, while the test is taken.
Most students will begin with Level 1, regardless of their age. While rules are not taught directly in this program, materials are available from AVKO to teach the rules, if educators so desire.
