Five in a Row is a unit study program that provides a gentle introduction to homeschooling for children ages 4 through 8. The program uses highly-acclaimed, beautifully-illustrated children's books that can be purchased or borrowed from the library.
Parents begin the school day by gathering their children and reading the same story, five days in a row. Each day, parents focus on a different aspect of the story, such as the geography or culture where the story took place, the art techniques used by the illustrator or math concepts demonstrated within the story.
FIAR is available in four volumes. Books from each volume may be used in any order. Alhough the authors are Christians, scripture references are only found in the FIAR Bible Supplement.
Parents using FIAR with a preschool child are using a complete program that does not require supplement. Parents teaching kindergarten and above will need to add a good phonics program and a beginner's math program, as well.
FIAR also provides curriculum suitable for younger and older children. These programs follow a different format, but still utilize high-quality, engaging and entertaining children's literature. Before Five in a Row is written with 2-4 year old children in mind. The activities and lessons promote school readiness, while fostering a love of reading and family togetherness.
Beyond Five in a Row, for ages 8-12, uses chapter books. All three volumes of BFIAR encourage children to read, think, wonder, research and communicate what they've learned. The lessons include writing assignments, history, geography, science, vocabulary, and more. Parents will need to add their own programs for math, grammar, spelling and penmanship.
Above and Beyond Five in a Row, for ages 12 and up, is written entirely to the student and is based on Hitty: Her First 100 Years. This literature-based study covers history, science, and more! This program can be completed in 6-8 weeks, and should be accompanied by a math, grammar and spelling program.
